I concur Graham - for straight procedural learning SL is probably more of a hindrance than a help particularly with students who are unfamiliar with the environment and may not have access to right PC etc. However the academic in question is not ruling it out in other contexts.

The Flash vs SL comparison is interesting, not least because it reflects the experience of Andy Lang and Jean-Claude Bradley with their Spectral Game. I guess it depends a little on the context of the activity -- if it's primarily 2D and shared presence isn't an issue, then why not Flash (assuming you have the development capability)? I normally reckon you need to have at least two criteria that SL meets "in spades" before it's worth using.

Thanks John, for the linkage and for the kind words. And kinda thanks for dredging up my past.... ;) The Virtual Revolution link is http://www.bbc.co.uk/virtualrevolution, where there are tens of hours of raw interviews (for download, to mash up, to do whatever with) with web folks like Tim Berners-Lee, Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jimmy Wales, Stewart Brand, Mitch Kapoor (funder for Second Life), Sherry Turkle and many many more. Heck, most of the people I reference in the thesis are there :)

OpenSim also does not have the politics of Second Life. As an elearning provider, I gave it a big go with 19 sims in Second Life at one time (12 now) but have stepped into OpenSim via Reaction Grid.

The performance is better, much less politics, truly supporting team, and it indeed is less expensive.

Nice post, thanks for pointing out OpenSim's adoption to the rest of the Commonwealth - Canadian and fan of the Queen (she visits, we go nuts, she leaves and takes no taxes - what's not to love?). =)
