Word up from Kenji Lamb, e-Learning Advisor (e-Assessment) at the JISC Regional Support Centre Scotland North & East

+ + + + +

Apologies for the short notice – but we would like to invite all those with an interest in Virtual/Simulated Worlds to a meeting of the VIEWS (VIrtual Education Worlds Scotland) forum next Monday (13th December) at Glasgow Caledonian University (directions to the venue on the wiki).

Virtual world technology has had its ups and downs recently, with users drifting away from platforms such as Second Life and Linden Labs removing their educational discounts. On a more positive note, groups like SQA have been forging ahead with their summative exams based in Caspian’s Thinking Worlds platform and Learn Direct & Build have had great success with their college and Historic Scotland projects.

Still, it seems like a good time to meet up and discover what’s happening in our institutions around the country. The forum meeting is open to all – to book in, all you need to do is add your name to this wiki page: http://bit.ly/gQKqke (no need to register, just click on edit and start typing!).

One other thing… we’ve started to pull together an agenda of the kinds of topics we’ll be discussing, but if you’d like to add something, then just add it to the bottom of the wiki!

Look forward to seeing you there!

The annual JISC online conference is open for registrations, and is worth considering.

This is now open for pre-event activities, such as reading and guided tours. The conference proper runs from November 24th to 27th. Being online you can, of course, access it from anywhere; no travel, train or plane costs, required.

The conference website is at:
http://www.jisc.ac.uk/events/2009/11/elpconference09.aspx

Note that you have to register, and there’s a small fee.

There’s two sessions on Second Life. One is by Kathryn Trinder from Glasgow Caledonian University:

The other is by Virtual World Watch:

In addition to this, there’s a number of scheduled events and guided tours in Second Life, facilitated by the JISC Regional Support Centres. So not bad – a conference that runs for several days, costs only £50 for attendance, travel and accommodation, and has hardly any climate impact. To quote James Clay …
